About the Artist

Coburn Hawk has pursued the creation of art and the celebration of beauty from a very young age. After graduating art school in 1988, he moved to Los Angeles with a degree as an Illustrator/Graphic artist.

He began working in the film industry as an Art Director, which was his career for the next several years. While making films, he continued to develop his style, painting large scale canvasas and murals. His chosen media during the early 1990's was Acrylic, in a style that was a mix of surrealism and abstract expressionism.

In 1998 a friend of his named Doug Powell approached him after seeing his new Oil paintings. He comissioned Coburn to produce a portrait...however he had a special request. He wanted a portrait of his Spirit. Not knowing where to begin but intrigued, Coburn began what would be the first of an entire body of work that would come to be known as "Spirit Paintings."

Since that first experiment, Coburn has completed over 65 "Spirit Paintings" and has found it to be artistically and spiritually fulfilling.
