About the Artist

Coburn Hawk has pursued the creation of art and the celebration of beauty from a very young age. After graduating art school in 1988, he moved to Los Angeles. His chosen media during the early 1990's was Acrylic, in a style that was a mix of surrealism and abstract expressionism. After a few years, he returned to Oil Painting to achieve the depth of color and richness he couldn't quite get from the acrylic medium.

In 1997 a friend of his named Doug Powell approached him after seeing his newest Oil paintings. He comissioned Coburn to produce a portrait...however he had a special request. He wanted the portrait to be of his "Spirit" rather than a representative portait. Not knowing where to begin, but intrigued, Coburn began what would be the first of an entire body of work that would come to be known as "Spirit Paintings."

Since that first experiment, Coburn has completed over 70 "Spirit Paintings" and has found it to be artistically and spiritually fulfilling.
